Free of synthetic polymers, authentic Italian Plasters are formulated with only the finest pigments, ground marbles, and imported aged lime. As natural lime cures, it returns to its original limestone state, forming calcite crystals within the surface. This crystalline structure reflects twice the amount of entering light—resulting in a beautifully soft radiance. Lime also exhibits a subtle translucence that displays colors with a depth and naturalness unattainable with gypsum, concrete, or synthetic materials. With the absence of modern synthetic additives, authentic lime plasters are free of VOCs or off-gassing.
With a naturally high alkalinity and the ability to transpire moisture, pure lime finishes can be applied where synthetic blends and gypsum products cannot. These properties yield finishes to create monolithic surfaces in bathrooms, showers, kitchens, backsplashes, and exterior surfaces. Lime’s high alkalinity is naturally resistant to mold, bacteria and insects, making it ideal for integrating with landscape architecture.
The surface characteristics of Italian plasters are extraordinarily varied. The textural qualities can range from rough-hewn stone, to suede, to as smooth as glass. The sheen of these plasters can also be finished to a spectrum from dead flat to fully reflective surfaces. Moreover, they can exhibit modeling characteristics from subtle to dramatic. This versatility is achieved through careful selection of materials and techniques, and encompasses a range of traditional Italian finishes.
